Translation

1Voice of Hartophnachthes, son of Snebonychos, before the carrier-of-Ra
2Eschnompmetis. Oh may Pre cause his lifetime to be long!
3Espmetis, the mḏre, has brought me three letters,
4(among them) a letter for Pa-ir-dit, son of Bereh. He has brought two (letters) for me.
5I have read them. I have heard all matters about which you have sent.
6You have sent concerning those who are elected as wab priests, in order to write
7in the temple 1Reading variant Zauzich, P. Berl. Eleph. 2 (1993): „… um (sie) im Tempel (ein)zuschreiben.“. That with which you are satisfied
8together with the wab priests holding office:
9I am satisfied with it (also). You have sent: “Look,
10they have billed it(?). Send to the wab priests according to the
11mentioned matters! 2Reading variant Zauzich, P. Berl. Eleph. 2 (1993): „man hat abgerechnet.‘ Schreib (auch) an die Priester die nämlichen Worte!“ Stop(?) considering it as your matter 3According to Zauzich, P. Berl. Eleph. 2 (1993). Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae reads here „?“.
12only 4Cf. Den Brinker / Muhs / Vleeming, DBL (2005), 52., because it is a matter
13of the four phyles!’ But Pa-hetnetjer,
14son of Eschnompmetis, is a wise man.
15He is a man able to conduct the investigation of a matter,
16without causing irritation(?) among the wab priests and
17the god himself. I have agreed with him. The god
18has agreed with him, too. But I do not know, who
19is selected in the heart of the wab priests. The men
20who are here will be wary of doing something
21which is not suitable. But if
22you send concerning something to this effect, 5 Comment in Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae: (eigentl. "geschrieben habt" = "geschrieben haben werdet").
23one may order not to allow to raise a plea (against)
24allowing him to investigate in the temple, in the town (and) in (every) place
25on earth. And one may order to give him
26the books whom he desires to carry out
27the investigation of the failed matters.
28Matters from which the god benefits
29are they. When you have sent
vso1to me 6According to Zauzich, P. Berl. Eleph. 2 (1993). concerning Osoroeris:
vso2‘You have quarrelled with him’ by sending to {me} him :
vso3‘You beware of nobody’,
vso4I would rather have said (to) Osoroeris:
vso5‘Be aware of the god!’ This (would be the case) not
vso6to hurt him. But because I
vso7was aware of him, it was appropriate
vso8to be aware of me, too. Concerning that you have sent to me:
vso9‘Nobody is doing something for which he can be seized.’
vso10I am aware that
vso11there was something which you are used
vso12to saying and which I do not know.
vso13But the people who hate (me)
vso14are those who say them. I am not
vso15in Elephantine today, neither in my name
vso16nor in the name of Osoroeris 7According to Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae. Reading variant by Den Brinker / Muhs / Vleeming, DBL (2005), 52: „my name is not | the name of Osoroeris“., son of Teos.
vso17The people saying the slander(?) do not remain hidden (from me).
vso18Those who reveal things which are worth doing
vso19for me: They are with Osoroeris. I have taken
vso20my 2 (artabas) wheat and the 2 (artabas) barley into his house.
vso21They are at his expense. Provide me as a reward(?)
vso22a favour, because he writes in the temple.
vso23He attacks me and them with obloquy,
vso24and he brings a disturbance(?) 8Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae gives here only „?“, Zauzich, P. Berl. Eleph. 2 (1993) translates “Unwetter(?)”. to the house
vso25of Espneti-hetnetjer and of Chnemeus(?) . 9According to Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae. Reading variant Zauzich, P. Berl. Eleph. 2 (1993): „Chnoum-em-hapi“.
vso26The things which I have not said will disgrace my name.
vso27He(?) will repay(?) (it), the god, to cause to take away
vso28his assets, too. I did not agreewith him
vso29in written form(?), [_] the wab priests formerly (not), too.

1 Reading variant Zauzich, P. Berl. Eleph. 2 (1993): „… um (sie) im Tempel (ein)zuschreiben.“
