Text 1
121st of Choiak: Thus has spoken to me The-Child-Born-In-Elephantine,
2Espmetis, son of Petearensnouphis, while I was (at) the portals of
3Chnoum, Satis and Anoukis, standing (to hear) that which is sought
4(from) the one in whom iniquity is found, (for) they gave it to my hands, namely
5making his plea: “I am the Osiris, Espmetis, son of Chnoum.
6Say to Petrah, son of Psenpoeris: ‘I did not allow that your (scil. full) name will be called out,
7the name, which your mother gave to you. Your name will be called out as follows: Petrah –
8Petearensnouphis had been your name – because I have discovered your heart (i. e. your character).
9Wealth was given to you in order that you (might) reveal your character.
10Offending the god is that which you have done. There is no imploration
11(nor) prayer (on) the dromos (of) Chnoum, as follows: ‘I do not know what I have done!’
12You know it! You drank (the) milk (from the) arbor (by) the quay,
13which is poured in libation for Pharaoh and Osiris-Onnophris. You have done
14the mortification of Isis! You have drunk milk (at) night,
15while the goddesses (i. e. Isis and Nephthys) were in mourning-garb. You have called out to your wife,
16saying ‘Tefnut, there is no goddess like her!’
17while the widow (i. e. Isis) was in the sacred grove. You have caused
18the singers to sing, so that you (might) pass the time.1Lit.so that you (might) make time which was passing. You have
19awakened the ba of Osiris from its sleep.
20You have thrown off the cover from the mixed-wine for (the) beginning of the year,
21while you were drinking with the Blemmyes, saying:’O herdsman,
22evening has come upon me, while I am celebrating (i. e. swigging). Thus has passed the time
23(of) the libation-pouring, while it (the drunkenness) is over me!’, (to) Pelaias, overseer of the cattle
24(of) my (scil. the divine child) mother, while he was making Chnoum enter. 2Translation according to a suggestion made by Martin, Demotic Texts (1996), 342 (C 26); also for line 25. You have allowed the time to go
25(to) the Abaton for the wrappings while you were drunk.
26[///] is an iniquity in the District of Elephantine. There were disposed
27these attorneys who measured wheat for the bakery. I have sent
28to them as follows: Come to the plea (of) the annulment (of the) iniquity!
29Those (things) which you have done: I have requested a favour for you. 3Lit.„a thing on your heads“. I withdraw
30from you. You (scil. Petra) have instructed them as follows: Doing [evil] cannot
31cause (an) offense to them.4Sentence of unclear meaning. Translation according to Martin, Demotic Texts (1996), 343 (C 26). I am well disposed towards you. [Chnoum does not forget]
32(this) iniquity! He has given (the) face (of) Pharaoh after them (scil. the attorneys), so that they do not
33have (a) share because they have listened to you (scil. Petra). He (scil. Pharaoh) has given the desert-people after them.
34Their fields have been taken away, their dates have been eaten, their
35people have been killed. They do not know to whom to make a complaint.
Vso 1 He has thrown them out of the nome because they have listened to you.’ ”
Text 2
Vso 2 “Say to Peti, son of Espmetis: ‘I have changed
Vso 3 the name which gave to you your mother. I did not allow your (scil. full) name to be called out
Vso 4 as follows: Petosiris, son of Espmetis, because I have discovered your heart (i. e. your character).
Vso 5 I have given to you wealth in order that you (might) reveal your
Vso 6 character. Harming me is what you have done. You have built your
Vso 7 houses encroaching on their houses. You have committed an iniquity
Vso 8 by that. You are doing more! They should be destroyed! May they perish
Vso 9 by the temple of Triphis before I
Vso 10 come to you! If I come to you, I will cause you to destroy them.
Vso 11 I will cause their eyes to be opened to this before you will die
Vso 12 (of) several of the(?) iniquiti(es). I have requested a favor from the hand of
Vso 13 the priest to whom I made a complaint concerning you before you
Vso 14 are crushed [///]
Vso 15 is that what was done. I have spoken (to) (scil. the priest) Patous, son of Harpaesis, as follows: Write this in a letter!
Vso 16 Let it be taken to them. There is no cause for persecution against you to be found There is no causing that it is found against you prosecution.
Vso 17 If you do not read it before them there will be found iniquity in you!’ ”
