1 Transcription and translation of the Demotic by Jan Moje. I am indebted to Andreas Winkler for discussing this text in the context of other slave contracts. 2 Such full writings of rmṯ are attested in Roman times: ERICHSEN, Demotisches Glossar, 247. 3 ⲙ̅ⲙⲟⲕ. 4 The Greek title ἐπίτροπος from the first part of the papyrus is transliterated into Demotic, which seems to be the first attestation in Demotic. For the Greek term see Straus, La terminologie de l'esclavage (reference due to A. WINKLER). 5 In the Greek part, the father of Pachompaonnophis is mentioned as Φα[///], the rest is unfortuantely lost in both languages. Due to the small lacuna in the Demotic part, the name must have been rather short. I assume Pa-wn (Phagonis), Pꜣ-ḥtr (Phates), or Pa-Mn (Phaminis), Pa-ꜥw (Paous). 6 Writing for yꜥby, which regularly means “illness”. Here the final sign looks like the divine determinative, which may point to epilepsy which is called in antiquity as the holy, divine illness, mentioned in Greek slave contracts as ἳερος νόσος, cf. URBANIK, Slave defects, passim. Due to this, I tentatively translate “epilepsy” here, 7 This element does not appear in the Greek sequence of the imperator’s identification, but due to the available space I assume this name here. Only for Gysrs the space would be too large, besides the line-break within the word would be rather unusual. Therefore, nothing else but „Nerva” might fit in the lacuna. |
