Summary of Content Quack indicates that this object contains medical and magical texts which refer to women. There are spells, prognoses, prescriptions, rites to ensure protection, šsꜣ.w-texts as well as the spells B and C of stelae of Horus. (Pommerening, Lehrtexte (2014), 12 and 33) Among others, the verso contains invocations to Imhotep to obtain visions. (Quack, Zauber ohne Grenzen (2013), 181 n. 16); Bortolani, Magical hymns (2016), 21 n. 56) The recto text seems to deal with gynecological matters. There are apparent references to sexual activity on the part of the woman and also to abstinence on her part under circumstances that have not yet been ascertained. The extensive rubrics give prescriptions, and there are the expected magical “elements” and references sprinkled throughout. The verso text has magical texts clearly for the protection of a woman, perhaps a companion to the text on the recto, though the scribe’s hand is different from that of the recto. The rubrics are far fewer in number than those on the recto and there are no prescriptions to speak of. A “mantra” runs throughout the texts of the verso. “Come (to me), Imhotep; recite the spells for this woman…” and in at least one place, “Come, Imhotep, and recite the spells for me,” i.e., the one who reads the text aloud.
Comments on Text Exact information about the script and language is missing up to now. This is based on the known hieratic texts from Brooklyn which are related to this object. (According to: Strukturen und Transformationen des Wortschatzes der Ägyptischen Sprache. Text- und Wissenskultur im Alten Ägypten, Papyrus Brooklyn 47.218.47 (2017)) According to Quack, one text on the verso shows Early Demotic as language (Quack, In: Bortolani, Magical Hmyns (2016), 21, n. 56).
Multilingualism Monolingual
Gender Woman
Comment on Gender There are female-specific magical and medical texts.
