Comments on Handwriting | The hand displays cursive tendencies, but still looks rather like the uncials of Coptic, than cursive Greek; uses ligatures and abbreviations; the 1 line on the outside was written more cursively, with a thinner calamos and probably by another hand. The language of the piece is a strong mixture of Greek and Coptic, however, it is better to consider it Greek with copticism; the Coptic-like handwriting does not contradict that, there are a number of Greek documents written similarly from Byzantine Egypt (Worp). | |

Comments on Text | "Linguistically the text displays an interesting mixture of Greek and Coptic." ("Sprachlich liegt eine merkwürdige Mischung von Griechisch und koptisch vor.", Hintze) Hintze in his edition does not even give a translation due to the (rather challenging) nature of the text. Worp considered the text Greek with Copticisms, and gave a translation with commentary to it. It is indeed better to consider it Greek with Copticisms; although both languages are present in a way, it is not a "bilingual" text in the strict sense of the word, just as Coptic texts containing Greek loanwords and even formulae are not called bilingual. Clackson and MacCoull list the text among the Coptic texts but follow Worp`s translation. |
